Kun-Pyo LEE is the Dean of School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Before joining The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he was the Professor at the Department of Industrial Design, KAIST, South Korea and the Director of the Human-Centered Interaction Design Lab for more than 30 years. He is Co-founder and President Emeritus of IASDR (International Association of Societies of Design Research). He also served as Chief Design Officer (Executive Vice President) of Corporate Design Center, LG Electronics. He is well known in Asia as an early pioneer in the field of design research, UX design and user-centered design, for which he was recognized as Honorary Fellow of the Design Research Society, and Local Hero at CHI 2015. After returning to KAIST from LG with unique experiences in industry and academia he has been focusing on establishing a new design education paradigm under the name of Design 3.0.
Design Education for The Future
In the comparatively brief history of design, we've seen how designers adapt to new paradigms. Now, as we face the new paradigm of digital transformation including AI, all stakeholders in design must revisit these lessons to usher in the next phase of design evolution. This new era of design offers many possibilities, but also poses significant risks of rendering existing disciplines obsolete. However, the obsolescence of some dated design practices is inevitable, and our focus should be on exploring new design methodologies and processes, rather than clinging to the old ones.
In recent decades, 'experience' has been a leading keyword in design education, research, and practice. But the user experience today is markedly different from the past. Nowadays, users interact with complex systems rather than a single product, and their engagement extends beyond clicks to actual interactions.
In this presentation, speculative ideas about the future of design education and research are explored through a comparative review. This review examines changes to major components such as design methods, processes, and users across past design paradigms. Lastly, a case study of the new design curriculum at the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University is introduced.
