  • Yannis Paniaras Yannis Paniaras Microsoft Principal Design Architect

    Yannis Paniaras / 潘业思 is an Italian-Greek designer, and has served as a principal level design architect for Microsoft. He brings 18 years of experience in design and management across diverse geographic markets and cultures.
    In 2002 Yannis relocated to China through an intergovernmental cooperation between the European Union and the Chinese government. Between 2003 and 2015 Yannis held senior and director level roles in design management for Microsoft and Nokia Design.
    In his latest leadership role at Microsoft’s CSEO Studio, he is collaborating with the Studio Transformation team on organization-wide strategy and execution through design lead initiatives to enable and accelerate CSEO’s transformation.
    Through collaborative partnerships with Microsoft’s design community and research, he is investigating and envisioning the changing nature of design, and the impact that the emergence of new technologies has for designers and their organizations.
    Yannis graduated with a Master of Arts degree from the Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. He has been educated in Italy, United States, Finland, Sweden, and China.

  • Julia Carlson Julia Carlson Microsoft UX Designer

    Julia Carlson is a UX Designer at Microsoft with 8 years of experience working on the Windows operating system. She started her career as a front-end developer for Windows Phone in 2011 with a focus on UI craftsmanship, product testing, and design process improvements.

    Since then, she has transitioned to a UX Design role, focusing on input experiences, incubation projects, and tailoring Windows for innovative new devices. In the past year, she has been on a mission to integrate Inclusive Design into her day-to-day process and act as a champion for accessibility on her team.

    Julia graduated with a degree in Visuals Arts from Seattle University and a degree in Graphic Design from Seattle Central College.

Content Introduction

How can diversity act as a source of innovation and disruption? How can cross discipline teams understand and act on empathy to create transformational change? How can inclusive, customer-driven leadership be applied to business decisions, cultures, and processes?

In this workshop, the speakers will introduce the core principles and methods of Inclusive Design. Join us to explore your role in empowering, equipping, and motivating your team to bring inclusive design to the forefront. The one-day experience will help participants gain a deeper understanding of both the theory and practice of Inclusive Design, and its transformational influence on culture or products. Over 10,000 people at Microsoft have attended this type of workshop. This has been taught to university students around the world, most recently at New York University, Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Inclusive design:
You'll apply this approach directly to your environment in two parts, giving you an idea of ​​how to perform the next practical steps, results, and ideas in your day-to-day work.

·Part 1: Application to Products/Programs: We will introduce the principles of inclusiveness as they apply directly to your experience or plan. You’ll work individually and in groups to learn and get input from others from different industries and backgrounds.

·Part 2: Application to the team culture: At any level of an employee, individual contributor, manager or senior leader, you have the opportunity to take action and build an inclusive culture for your team. We will introduce the best practices and begin to document how, when, and where to take action to achieve positive results.
