John Maeda is widely recognized as an American design thinker with extensive leadership experience in product experience across both consumer and enterprise sectors. He was an early pioneer in promoting the commercial application of generative art and computational design in Web2 and Web3. As the first recipient of the White House National Design Award, he was honored for his algorithmically generated visualizations powered by data and AI. Additionally, he is a renowned author, online influencer, and investor in diverse startups.
Currently, he serves as Vice President of Design and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft. Previously, he held roles including Chief Technology Officer at Everbridge, Board Member of Sonos and Wieden+Kennedy, Partner at Kleiner Perkins, Head of Data Visualization at the MIT Media Lab, Head of Design & Inclusion at Automattic, Executive Vice President and Chief Experience Officer at Publicis Sapient, and the 16th President and CEO of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
He has authored five books, including the beginner-friendly guide to AI/ML "How to Speak Machine" and the 2006 technology bestseller "Laws of Simplicity." His writings, interviews, and talks have been featured in prominent media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, TED, BBC, the World Economic Forum, the UN Climate Change Conference (COP), CNN, The Economist, Forbes, USA Today, Fortune, Fast Company, and Esquire.
